switch between windows

I have just installed vista basiv on my pc ...windows xp what does switch
between windows mean please

It activates the Alt-Tab command so you can quickly move between your
application windows.

there is icons in the left side (bottom) one says show desktop means that if
you have many windows open and you want to go to the monitor where the
shortcuts icons are you can just click on that icon and this will take you
there, now switch between windows means the same but with different windows
open, now maybe you can help me when i used to go there it appears like
magic, but now is doing it like the old version, you know what i mean, please
write if you can help me
