Vista Deactivation/Activation
Hello

I hope someone out there can help me

I have recently built my own pc puchasing the hardware and putting it
together myself, the motherbaord turned out to be faulty and I had to return
which they replaced with an upgrade, this is where the trouble started, once
I replaced the old motherbaord in my system , windos vista recognised this as
a major hardware change and decativated windows on pc, I tried to activate
online but says the product code already in use so contacted microsft
customer services to activate over the phone, tried to explain what had
happened but was told that because I purchased an OEM vista product and not
retail ( even though it was from a reputable online company i bought it from
) that they cannot help and I have to purchase a retail version of vista
windows even though I have already bought a version and paid for it

Can anyone advise what I should do to try and resolve this as seem to be
banging my head against a brick wall with Microsoft, it seems unfair that I
bought a fully operational version of Vista that I should now be made to pay
for another version because of a faulty motherboard!

Use the phone activation again and LIE and tell them you had to
reinstall Vista because you got a virus that you couldn't remove. Don't
mention the motherboard or anything else.

Of course, if you're tired of this
you-are-a-thief-until-you-prove-differently crap, check out Open Source.
I recommend Ubuntu, which can be gotten for FREE at www.ubuntu.com Order
the free Live CD and boot the CD on your computer so you can have Ubuntu
check out your hardware without having to install it. They will even pay
the postage to deliver the CD to you. It comes with access to over
25,000 FREE programs.

You would do well to read up on Ubuntu depositories, where it states that
many of the '25000' programs are not free at all, and will not necessarily
include programs which are well known or compatible with well known
applications.

FREE sure is a big selling point with you, huh ?

Re: Vista Deactivation/Activation
You don't contact Microsoft Customer Service. You phone the activation phone
number that is presented to you when on-line activation fails. Microsoft is
responsible for activation even if you do have an OEM copy of Vista. Explain
that you replaced the M/B due to a defect. Don't volunteer any extra
information. If the person doesn't want to help you ask to speak to their
supervisor. Keep going till you get satisfaction.

BTW: The people on the other end are instructed NOT to challange you, but we
all have a bad day occasionally.

Picky, picky. I see you offered no help for the OP's problem. Why is
that? You *are* an MVP after all.

Tell that to the environmentalists.

Everyone needs it but there are a small number that don't want it.

If you are going to argue you need to be more precise (like are you sure you
meant air's? Air's what is free?)

An OEM distribution is tied to the computer on which it's first installed.
Typically, the "computer" is defined as the motherboard. These are the rules
to which you implicitly agreed when you purchased the OEM distribution.

Your beef is with the motherboard company for not honoring their warranty
(i.e., exact replacement).

Any reputable motherboard company will recognize the issue and provide you
with an OEM distribution gratis.
