The Beta program operates on many modes. There are different groups for
different focuses. The Vista "beta test" that obtained the free betas had
gone through many, many hours of work on specific features. We had to
install, reinstall, update, submit feedback, test, keep track of issues, etc
etc. This was the development team's way of making sure various functions
they were working on were functioning properly.
The Customer Preview Program was an entirely different focus. For one, it
was largely to give the public an idea of what to expect with the next OS.
It came with a feedback tool, which many had used. It opened up to a far
wider audience than the specific focus group of the technical beta program.
In reality, and I'm going to be honest, nobody "deserves" anything. We do
the beta testing to help out. The Windows development team is nice and
rewards us for hard work, but by no means are they obligated to and by no
means does anyone "deserve" a reward.
Everyone is greatful to those that submitted reports during the CPP. That's
great. But submitting a bug report on a product you're playing around with
versus full on beta testing it are entirely different things.
