Vista RTM version 6.0 build 6000:

Since a couple of days when I open Windows Explorer I see that the
traditional “File | Edit | Tools | Help” toolbar has reappeared. No matter
what I do, I cannot get rid of it!

I’m aware that pressing the Alt tab toggles that toolbar. But toggling it
has no longer any effect on it.

Equally, checking/unchecking “always show menus” in Folder Options | View
has no effect regardless whether I restart or not. I’ve tried resetting
Windows Explorer to its default view state, but that had no affect either.
The “File | Edit | Tools | Help” toolbar doesn’t go away!

I checked in the registry all values for “alwaysshowmenus”, and all are set
to 0 (decimal & hexadecimal) – checked and default states.

In Windows Explorer itself, under Organize | Layout is an option to check or
uncheck “Menu Bar” which also no longer has an effect on the “File | Edit |
Tools | Help” toolbar.

Can anyone suggest another way to get rid of it and re-enable the Tab
toggle? Are there any scripts out there?

FYI, so far this has only happened in Windows Explorer and not in Internet
Explorer.

But I do would like to get rid of it from Windows Explorer – it sort of
ruins the whole look of it and blank its appearance breaks up the integrated
theme. Shame really!

All help would be much appreciated.

Organize, Layout, Menu Bar.

Thanks Mike - but no thanks;

If you check my original post FULLY, you'll see that I've already mentioned
that this no longer works either!

Any better ideas??

Sorry, I didn't notice that you said that had no effect.

Alt tab has nothing to do with the menu. That's (always been) how you
toggle thru open windows.

If Organize, Layout, Menu Bar has no effect then clearly something is
corrupted.

Pressing Alt alone toggles it here. Didn't know that one!

Hi Mike; no worries. But:

Regarding my issue mentioned above, I just noticed a rather odd behaviour:

Every time I uncheck in Folder Options | View ‘Always show menus’ then click
on Apply and OK, then reopen Folder Options | View, the ‘Always show menus’
option is checked again. It’s like something always forces this option to be
checked.

It makes no difference if I have any other window open or not, or if the
relevant “alwaysshowmenus” registry keys are set to 0. Even though these are
set to 0, the ‘Always show menus’ option is forced checked again in Folder
Options | View. And yes, that setting controls whether the traditional
toolbar is shown or not, just like the Alt toggle.

Very strange!

All help and advice would be much appreciated to resolve this nagging issue.

On the General Tab of Folder Options, do you have Use Classic Window Folders
checked? This forces the File Edit menu to always be there, regardless of
the Always Show Menus option. But that option is not being forced checked
here.

Whether it's checked or unchecked, the menu is always there when using
Classic folders.

Strange indeed!

Mike

Re: can't hide "File | Edit | Tools | Help" toolbar in Windows Explore
I had this problem too.

The only way I could find of making it disappear was to open Folder Options
and choose Restore Defaults.

Mike;

Thanks for that, but no, in Folder Options | General, 'Tasks' is at the
default setting (Show preview and filters). Failing any other ideas, I am
starting to presume it’s a Vista bug that's creeping in under some obscure
condition(s).

In general I can't help feeling that even this RTM version still has a lot
of issues that need to be ironed out. For example, IE7 tends to behave
strangely at times (freezes for 10-20 seconds); my screen (17" high res
1920x1200 on a Dell Precision M90 laptop with 4GB RAM plus an ATI card of
512MB RAM) sometimes starts to flicker a little when opening or closing
larger windows; the media centre is buggy to say the least; Defender is still
in beta; the inbuilt firewall, though a big step up from the XP version, is
still sadly lacking and all too many and crucial areas to inspire real trust,
and so on.

Though to its credit, this Vista Ultimate looks great and otherwise works
very well; Office 2007 seems to work even better than under XP-SP2, and even
despite the still appalling lack of software compatibility (security software
in particular), the present integration of drivers is highly commendable.

Still, I certainly won’t rush into buying Vista when this version expires
after 30 days, but will wait for Vista SP1 - even if that takes 12-18 month
as Redmond predicts at present.

One more thing: As lovely as all this eye-candy is, Vista does gobble up RAM
faster than a kid can get through ice-cream! I have 4GB of RAM, but Vista
Ultimate plus antivirus and a half decent firewall (Trend PC-cillin) run in
tandem with Defender and the inbuilt firewall, takes up nearly 1 GB of my RAM
- lol !!!

Open up IE7 and WMP, and RAM usage goes up to 1.25GB - as I used to say
years ago: You can never have enough RAM ...

Someone else suggested Restore Defaults in the Foldler Options. I'm
certainly out of ideas!

That's because you have lots of RAM. The more you have the more it will
use. That's a good thing - it increases performance.

I currently have IE7, WMP, Mail, Outlook, Word, Excel and Access 2007 all
loaded up. Task Manager is showing 470 MB used out of my 1 gig RAM, but it
also shows 612 MB cached and 1 meg free.

You want the OS to use as much as it needs. RAM that's sitting there
unused isn't doing you any good.

Mike
