Office XP installed now Word will only open in Safe Mode
Brand new PC with vista, downloaded all updates. Installed Office XP
small biz edition (chose not to install outlook but I installed
everything else - excel, word, publisher). Trouble is I fire up MS
Word and it just hangs on the splash screen. I can use it in Safe Mode
but not in normal mode.
MS website no help.

Re: Office XP installed now Word will only open in Safe Mode
Hi,
Have you brought Office XP up to Service Pack 3?
Additionally, after you make sure that you're at SP3, check to see if you
have a file anywhere on your hard drive named NORMAL.DOT. If you do find it,
rename it to NORMAL.BACK and then try launching Word.

I checked and I have applied Office SP3. I also performed a search on
my PC for NORMAL.DOT (that's a template right?) and got nothing back
(though that might be me getting to grips wit Vista).

Re: Office XP installed now Word will only open in Safe Mode
GM--
1) Run detect and repair from Add/Remove or from Help>Detect and Repair if
you can get any of your other Office apps to open up.
Click Start on the taskbar, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add Remove Programs.
3. Click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Add/Remove.
4. Click Repair Office.
5. Click Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Finish.
2) When you get it fixed, make sure you install all 3 Service Packs unless
you have already.

These should help if Detect and Repair doesn't fix this.

Re: Office XP installed now Word will only open in Safe Mode
You're welcome.
I did Microsoft call center support about 12 years ago, and Word was the
first product I supported. Having users rename the NORMAL.DOT -- so that
Word would rebuild a brand new one -- was the first thing we'd have a user
try. It worked lots of miracles back then, and it still seems to have its
uses even now. :>

It works the first time I go in but if I exit normally then WORD
regenerates NORMAL.DOT and I can only enter in safe mode again!!!

Re: Office XP installed now Word will only open in Safe Mode
Yes, Word SHOULD generate a NORMAL.DOT if it doesn't already find one.
That's why I had you rename the first one that you found -- to force Word to
make a clean NORMAL.DOT. But you shouldn't have to keep on making new ones
each time that you launch Word.
You might want to discuss the problem you are having in the
microsoft.public.word.application.errors newsgroup.
