Printing Device Manager List
Where'd the print command go in Device Manager?

I like to print the list to a file and compare it to older versions as
things changed.
Very handy to track down differences if things broke.

But the 'Action' menu no longer has a "print" command.

I just opened Device Manager on a WinXP machine and can't find any Print
command.

Click on any entry in the list of devices. You should see a
printer icon appear in the toolbar as well as a print option
under the Action menu.

Good luck

Re: Printing Device Manager List
Among many 3rd party programs, you could try the WinAudit program, found
here:

http://www.pxserver.com/WinAudit.htm

In Options, you can set to only audit Hardware Devices, and then save the
results as a file, or print them...

Interesting! I hadn't noticed Print had disappeared from Device Manager but,
it indeed has. I can't see any way to turn it back on.

One possible workaround would be to use MSINFO32 instead. It provides much
of the same info, and the report can be saved to a text file or printed out.

See for example, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300887

MSINFO32 is also available by default on Windows XP, and Windows 2000
Workstation (not on Windows Server 2003, for some reason ... but the EXE
will run, if you copy it over from an XP machine).

Just go to a command prmpt and run "msinfo32".

Hope this helps a bit,

There is a 'export' command in msinfo32, but it only seems to export the
open category. I didn't see any easy way to export all.

oh well. Although it's not quite as easy to use, 'SIW' seems to be the best
choice for saving configuration info. It's nice that it doesn't require
installation, ain't too many programs written that way anymore!

Thanks all,
-bb

In the MSINFO32 window, highlight "System Summary" at the top of the tree in
the left-hand pane.

Then go to File, Export, and choose type as "text file".

This should save an extremely comprehensive report of everything. On my main
machine, the report is 680K - that's detailed :-)

SIW is a fine tool. But I like to get things done with the built-in
facilities, whenever possible.
