speaker icon missing from taskbar

My speaker icon is missing from the taskbar - I am running vista. When I go
into the taskbar and start menu properties in the notification area I can't
check the volume box. Anyone know how I can get the icon back?

restart a couple times, you should notice that sometimes the power or
network will also disappeer, it vista smart brain
