Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
I powered up my new Sony Vario (Vista Premium Home)connected to my WEP
enabled router and had 10 minutes glorious internet access and then it
disconnected. Since then I can only connect locally to the Router. I have
tried both an Orange Livebox and a BT Voyager 2100 router with the same
results. The XP laptops connect through OK. I have tried no WEP and
variations thereof. I have Googled and found other bolgs with the same
problem but no solution. Can anyone help?

Re: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
Try enabling 'intranet'. The last 'fix' from Microsoft turned it off by
default.

RE: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
Did you setup the Internet connection in Network & Sharing Center? Use the
wizard there and set it up again. You might also need to do a complete system
reset after setting up the connection. I've read lots of complaints about the
Orange-vista connection. Check out the Orange web site for more help. Seems
they are having lots of trouble with vista.

Re: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
John - Thanks for the reply. The last fix was what just loaded in the 10
minutes I was on the internet. I am not sure why an intRAnet setting should
be relevant. I made the change but it did not resolve the problem. Thank you
anyway. Regards.

Can you ping the outside net from the box? Can you ping the router?
Can you ping that machine from another machine on the router?
Do you have a proxy server?
Firewall?
Can you get mail?
Try this and post the results please? We can try to help you here. Shouldn't
be an issue with Vista or the router if they see each other, but may be a
config error.

Re: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
After the 'fix', I had the same problem you had. After numerous other
attempts, I entered the address for my modem to see if I was getting to it
thru the router via my network connection. An option bar appeared on the IE
explorer asking if I wanted to enable 'intranet' and explaining that it was
now off by default. I figured, what the heck, I can always turn it back
off. Whalla, everything worked, so I went into IE and set up the security
for intranet to the same as I had for internet and all is well. Sorry it
didn't work for you.

Re: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
Hello Curtis - the Vista laptop cannot ping the router or any PC on the
Wireless Lan or any external address eventhough the Network Staus on the
laptop is "Connected " - with Access: Local Only.
The Firewall is switched off. There is no Proxy. I cannot get mail as I
cannot access the internet. If I try to IPCONFIG RENEW it responds with
UNABLE TO CONTACT YOUR DHCP SERVER - however the Wireless LAN icon still
shows it connected with Limited Access. The Network and Sharing Center shows
the laptop connected to an Unidentified Network (Green Line) and no
connection to the Internet (Red X)

Re: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
John - When you say you entered the address of your modem please advise where
you entered the address and how.

Re: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
It is typed in the address bar. In my case it is http://192.168.0.1/

Re: Cannot Get Internet Access - Local Access Only
You might want to try system restore. Reset your download procedure to not
automatically download updates, and then manually control the downloads.
