Host Process has stopped working error upon start up

every time I boot up I get the "host process has stopped working.....windows
will notify you when there is a problem", but part of the glitch is you can't
download updates, This ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520 ) claims to
fix the problem, but it doesn't, also when I start up I get the error message
2 or 3 times and my screen goes blank for a few seconds, this is a new laptop
with barely anything on it. When is mega-god microscoft going to address
this??????
