Re: Battlefield 2142
Let me re-write this..

I bought a BRAND NEW computer. My Dell XPS 410 has all the new bells and
whistles with top notch video card and more ram than I need.

I had an option to select Vista Ultimate at the time of purchase. After all
the hype MS has been giving it why wouldn't I take it over XP (which I use on
my two other computers with no problems)?

I have gone through all of my hardware and it is all great. All the drivers
are up to date and everything is (appears to be) running fine.

I too could play Battlefield 2142 until "the cows come home" but now I
cannot. I left town for a week and a half and when I went to play again it
will not work right. I go online to play and I connect - no problem. I find
a server - no problem and while I am connecting to the server the thing
crashes and Vista notifies me that it has to close it. No reason and no
solution. Just going to close it for now and we will report back when we
figure out why. I am waiting...

Now the cows have come home and I cannot play anymore....

I did NOTHING to my computer in that time frame. The last thing I did
before I left was play BF 2142. The first thing I tried to do after reading
my emails was play BF 2142. Since I have been gone it appears I have gotten
some updates from Microsoft automatically installed on my computer. Is this
the problem? I don't know. I AM JUST A NORMAL PERSON NOT A FREAKING
COMPUTER EXPERT.

But what I am hearing is that before you buy the hottest new Microsoft OS
you should probably become a complete expert on all things computer. The
Revolutionary OS that allows point and click ease actually requires an
advanced degree to understand what will and will not work and why it will and
will not work.

You guys crack me up when you say "I play this game with no problems at all"
welllllll ummmmm except for the whole having to play it as an administrator
because of the punk buster issue which "isn't microsft's fault" by the way.
And it will not be compatible but it will still work so ignore that....

So really you can play it with a little bit of a problem would be more
accurate right?

Well, I fixed the punk buster thing and played as an admin and it worked
(after searching around for the way to fix it for a few hours). Until now.
So now what is my magical fix to make it work with Vista? Run it in XP
compatibility mode? Tried that. It keeps asking me to put in the disk which
just so happens to already be in the computer.

So I go back to my original rant. Instead of saying "buy this awesome new
OS from Microsoft" maybe Microsoft should fully advertise all the
compatibility issues you will have and glitches to be expected. "Buy our new
OS if you are 100% sure what all the changes mean to the existing software
collection you have and are fully ready to make technician level decisions to
diagnose any unforseen compatibility issues and fix them yourself". That
would be more accurate right?

I blame them for that. If you are telling me they didn't see this coming
and couldn't have WARNED me before buying then you sir are a liar. I went
through many of these same issues when XP Pro came out and heard all of the
same crap I am hearing today. "poor Microsoft - it isn't their fault. The
new OS is awesome and it is everyone else that is to blame".

The truth is that MS has unleashed a new OS on the world and not warned of
all the pending compatibility issues AGAIN and I, the average Joe user, am
left scanning BBs trying to find the next trick to make it run smooth until
either Microsoft fixes the problem or they bully all the other software
designers into making fixes to run on thier new great
platform.........AGAIN... Shame on me for falling for it again. I can't
wait to do this again in several years. I am sure by then the next new OS
will be even better and not have any issues and I will buy it thinking that
is the truth.

Have fun playing BF 2142 until the cows come home. I wish I could but my
cows came home and I am stuck playing Texas Hold 'em with them because it
seems to be a nice game that was included with Vista that works. Hooray for
me.

And Microsoft is offering free disks of XP to people completely pissed with
Vista issues. So what is your point? Isn't that just as much an admission
of guilt on their part?

Re: Battlefield 2142
Again, I'm not making any excuses for Microsoft. But let me pose this
question to you.

Battlefield 2142 was working and you were able to play it until your hands
went numb. You stop playing, for a week came back and it's broke.

So the fact that it worked and worked well for X number of weeks\months
doesn't tell you there isn't a compatibility problem ?

Have you checked the BF forums ? Have you never seen a XP user report that
the game was working then suddenly it stopped working ? Why is it, a person
can have a problem when using XP and that's OK, it's not a OS problem, But
if you have the same problem under Vista, it's completely Microsoft's fault.

You don't need to be a computer expert, but you should have learned from
your XP experience not to run head first into something. I know you're
smart enough not to be duped into listening to marketing Hype. Do you switch
back and forth between Coke and Pepsi every time one of them runs a
commercial saying their product is better and more refreshing ?

And technically Microsoft did warn us all of compatibility issue. They may
have not called to inform you of every possible issue, but that's not their
job. It was Dell's job to find out what you use the computer for and to warn
you of issue. The OEM is responsible for support not Microsoft, The fact
that Dell start selling XP systems again, should have been your warning that
Vista isn't for everyone. Microsoft had plenty of info out, about how moving
the Video driver out of the kernel mode would cause a performance loss. They
talked about the UAC and how the new security model would affect users.
When Vista came out, there was number of applications I use that I knew
wouldn't work it with, because of the new security model. But I can't blame
Microsoft, I'm waiting for those companies to launch an updated version of
those software apps

But let's start pointing fingers and look at what's wrong.
Have you tried turning off the UAC and see how the game runs there ?
Have you tried logging in with the True Admin account and see if there is a
difference
have you tried logging in under a different user account, namely a different
profile ?

I haven't had the issue of the CD\DVD disc not working, but I've read other
people having issue with the different Anti-Piracy software and Vista's own
security fighting it out.

I don't know if you ever played the BF1942 series, but a while back (around
2003) evenblance released a new Punkbuster that didn't work under XP, until
you went in and assigned it Act as part of the Operating system rights. This
caused a huge uproar and they removed that requirement, but running as an
Admin is still there, it's just that everyone is an Admin under XP

I think it's called, Making the Customer Happy.

Business 101, if that's what the customer wants, that's what the customer
gets.

WinXP costs the same as Vista, I'm sure it's no skin off their teeth to swap
your Vista for an XP, if that's what you want. Keep in mind though a lot of
hardware that is coming pre-installed with Vista does NOT have drivers for
Windows XP. Mainly laptops. I had several Sony Vaio notebooks I tried to
downgrade from Vista to XP, and it flat out did not work.

Just something to keep in mind when you finally decide to downgrade Zero.
I'd contact Dell before you decide to make the switch and make sure drivers
for your hardware are available under XP. Shouldn't be a problem with a
Desktop, but you never know.

Not saying XP is the wrong way to go, I mean XP will be supported for years
down the line, at least until it becomes financially less viable to support.
I think Win2K is still officially supported, so I don't think you have much
to worry about.

Doesn't BF2.142k have a Linux client? There could be another option if you
want to venture into Linux territory, I think Dell supports Ubuntu now which
means Dell could probably tell you if your system has drivers for Linux.

Or why not blame EA for not patching the problem? I mean it's not like Vista
was some big secret that no one knew about. I'm sure Microsoft would bend
over backwards for any dev with a question or seeking aid.

Don't get me wrong, I love MS and EA equally, so don't accuse me of bagging
on one or supporting another.

Re: Battlefield 2142
First of all - let me apologize for my long rant. I am just pissed. If
something worked fine and with no glitches under the old OS then I fully
expect it to work that way inder the new one. I want the new stuff to be
backwards compatible and i do believe it was advertised that way. You are
correct though - I am not 100% sure it is Microsoft's fault but I cannot see
anyone else to blame. If you release somethign that is new and improved then
it should do all the same things the old one did with no issues.

But I will try and stay open minded...

In that time frame the ONLY thing that happened was several auto updates from

finger at that? I instinctively tried to rollback the computer to before i
left to see if it would work again and (I promise) it keeps failing during
the rollback. I have tried it 3 times and refuse to waste anymore time
trying.

Yes and Yes and no help. The CD/DVD issue only happens when i try and run
the game in XP SP2 compatibility mode. If I am running it under plain Vista
Admin mode it does not occur.

Again - my problem is that I load the game fine and find a server fine. I go
to connect to the server and it gets halfway there and crashes. I get a
generic error as to why the crash happened and have no information on how to
proceed. Just a "we will look into it and get back to you".

So understand my frustration. I have done all the tricks and tried all that
I know to do and all I am getting is the ability to play Texas Hold 'em......
I am jaded and my windows experience is not so great now.

I have had numerous other glitches with stuff freezing up for no reason but
that is all expected. I know there are bugs that need to work out on the new
OS but this one thing erks me. It erks me because it worked fine and now it
doesn't. I try all these fixes and they don't help. I try to take my
computer back in time to before the updates and it won't let me go there so i
am stuck here typing on a BB instead of shooting people....... frustrating

I apreciate your time and help. If you have any ideas please let me know...

Re: Battlefield 2142
Have you tried loading the maps in Single player mode ? I'm going to assume
it's not any single map, but any map at all.

Does you're event log under program-Admin tools, show any errors or anything
that has a yellow or red flag ?

Obviously, it's possible that one of the updates is causing a problem. If
you run windows update, you can look at the last set of updates. Can you
post what the last 2-3 updates where ? There might be a tech article on it
and any problems caused.

I'm assuming you already tried the usual un-install and re-install the game
and patches ?

Note there is a 4 page thread on this in the EA forums, assuming this is the
same thing you are seeing. There is a fix posted that might work for you

Re: Battlefield 2142
Dale:

The crash happens in online or single play mode and the map does not matter.

I tired the fix you provided on the EA board (IP MASKING) and it did not
work - same problem.

I have 2 critical errors recorded but neither are recent:
Kernel Power - 3 total
Driver frameworks user mode - 1 total

I have numerous regular errors but only 2 that have been recent. One of them
the source was blank (nothing listed) but the log shows it as "application".
It has happened 36 times total with 4 / 6/ 26 (hour/24 hour/7 days)

the other has a source of "application error" and log of "application". It
has happened 37 times total with 2/3/13. Note: I tried to start BF 2142 2
times today....

My list of recent updates are as follows:
>Defender

7/4 Definition 1.19.2731.4
6/29 definition 1.19.2728.3
6/27 definition 1.19.2726.3

>Media center

6/30 Cumulitive Update KB935652

>.NET Framework

6/27 3.0 x86

> Windows Vista

6/27 KB931836

That is all I have. I hope it helps....

Re: Battlefield 2142
Hi, I am having the same problem as zero except mine won't even start. I
have reinstalled a few times and my windows vista 32bit laptop is fresh out
of box today so I know it isn't the computer's fault. I am not going to
blame vista right away, however, I fear greatly that the games I ordered (The
Guild 2/The Guild 2 expansion) will not work either. Now I understand some
people have gotten this game to work with vista, however, I haven't even seen
the intro video even after I installed all the EA updates with makes me want
to blame microsoft and their new updates.. I am glad to hear I am not the
only having this problem, and I understand I am on a microsoft fan boy site,
but I just want someone to help me out so I can get my money's worth.

Just so you know, this isn't a Microsoft Fanboy site. It's actually a web
interface to the Microsoft Vista newsgroups, which has some MVPs around and
has a bunch of regular joes around to help with problems. There are some
pro-Vista people here and some not so pro-Vista people here. Like me, I have
Vista installed for tinkering and playing around with, but overall, I still
use XP for everything
