Setting up LAN connection to share files and play AOE II:Conq on vista OSs

I have looked back 20 or so pages to see if the same question is already
asked. As I couldnt find any, I will ask my problem myself.

Me and 3 of my friends want to play Age of empires II: conquerors in
multiplayer mode. We have four Vista(HP) machines and an 8-ports
ethernet switch. We also have enough RJ45 cables to connect between PCs
and Switch.
We would like to know how to set up a LAN connection among us in order
to play the game and to share files. We dont want to access internet or
share internet connections among us.

we have tried disabling Firewall and setting static ips but no avail.

Any useful idea will be very much appreciated.
