Vista 64 with auto-updates done. FEAR was working fine but now fails to
launch. Message says something akin to "FEAR has encountered a problem and
will close."
Loaded Medal of Honor Airborne, loaded latest patch. Same thing. Tried
compatability mode to no avail. Tried disabeling firewall and antivirus. Same
thing. Shouldn't matter though because it worked before. I'm sure this is
something simple but it's kicking me at the moment. HELP community!!
Appreciation awaits.

Can't help without system specs. Update your video/audio card drivers, if
you installed software recently, use system restore to rewind your system,
see if that helps. Sometimes when you install stuff it causes other stuff to
break.

Go to the program file in MY Computer and launch from the folder itself,
shortcut seems to fade after a while.

Or you installed something onto your system that is now causing the program
to not work. Try System Restore, roll back your system a few weeks, see if
that helps.

Fix for FEAR 1.08 not starting in Vista
Although I am running Vista 32 bit I think this may still fix your problem.
More Vista wierdness here. Although V1.00 of FEAR ran just fine, when I patched to 1.08 it crashed on launch every time. After a couple of days of searching the forums and finding nothing (that is why I am posting) I found a solution on my own.

Even though you allow the fear.exe to run under UAC for some reason Vista and FEAR v1.08 need you to allow the fear.exe EXPLICITLY under DEP (data execution prevention).

R-click on Computer -> Properties; Choose Advanced System Settings from the left side of screen.
Click Settings under the Performance section and then click the DEP tab.
Specifically allow the fear.exe by typing it in or browsing to the location.

Thats it! Besides being difficult to debug (no messages other that FEAR stopped working) MS has buried the DEP so it is very hard to find. Why would DEP be under "Performance"????
