OMG, ZOMG, and UOMG, Dude, EverQuest is... EverQuest. There's only one,
the other games are EQ2, EQ:OA, and EQ:LoD (Or whatever that cardgame is
called) Oh, don't forget Champions of Norrath Series (awesome).
If your updater is updating correctly, your probably OK in that regard,
but for fun you might try running the game as administrator, or just for
giggles, try disabling UAC (from the User Control Panel).

It suggests disabling firewall/anti-virus as Shane suggested, so check
that out, might help.
I'm running EQ on a similar system, no serious issues other than the
game UI needs serious help. DAMN that game is old. Windows Firewall
doesn't seem to have a problem with the game.
