i cant launch STEAM: it says that its already running

i used to play Counter Strike Source fine before today but now i cant
run it. the following message appears after 26% of updating:

"Steam is already running. You may only run one copy of Steam at a
time."

i tried to end the process of Steam at Task Manager and start Steam
again, i tried to restart the pc to see if it works but that message
keeps coming.

does anyone have a clue of how can i make it work?

when i turn on my pc Steam starts running itself - it starts updating
and then that message appears. i dont try to run it myself cause i know
that it starts itself.

My experience, Steam is having a NUMBER of issues. This problem is reported
by a number of people and everyone needs to lay some heat on Steam.

Re: i cant launch STEAM: it says that its already running

Had the same problem, looked around a bit and found a solution that
worked for me. Go to the steam folder and find the steam.exe file and
right click and go to properties. Click the compatibility tab and if its
on (For windows XP or anything else) turn it off then hit ok and try
running. Fixed it for me maybe it'll work 4 u.

Re: i cant launch STEAM: it says that its already running

what i did is uninstall Steam. then i downloaded it again from 'Welcome
to Steam' (http://www.steampowered.com) and when i ran it i just
switched the auto-run off if u know what i mean - i made it so it doesnt
start runnin itself when i turn my pc on... it took ages to update but
whatever - it works now... i did this b4 i saw that compatibility
thing...
good luck to everyone who has this problem

Re: i cant launch STEAM: it says that its already running

Their are a few ways to resolve this that ive found myself.

1. You can disable all you firewalls. This worked for me and so did
the next way.

This may or may not work for you.

Note: these instructions are intended for people who have the
"Counter-Strike 1 Anthology". Also these are only intended to work if
you are on Windows Vista and are getting the "Steam is already running
you may run only one copy of steam at a time" error.

To get on STEAM:

1. Go to control panel.

2. Go to programs and features.

3. Go to Counter-Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes, and hit
uninstall.

4. Steam will do its thing and then you will log in as normal.

5. Hit cancel when the prompt askes you if you want to uninstall
Condition Zero Deleted Scenes.

And there you go your now logged onto Steam like nothing ever happened.

Note: You can use a game other than Condition Zero Deleted Scenes.
The above was just an example. But the program or game must be a Steam
game.
