Flight Simulator X not working
Just installed the retail version of FSX, patched with SP1, but when I
attempt to play, the intro scene sounds fine, but the video cuts in an
out every couple of seconds - a distorted picture for about half a
second, then black and it cycles like that.
Have unistalled and reinstalled with no change. DX10 is up to date.
Drivers and everything are current.
I ran the demo with no problems, my PC is more than up to the task (5.9
in Vista useless rating system). I can only wonder if there is a problem
running FSX with Vista 64 - I ran the demo on the betas.
I don't suppose it could be an issue with the most recent nVidia
drivers? Have the very latest non-beta drivers *forget the exact
version number).
Any support would be much appreciated. Could boot back into XP, but
trying to migrate everything over to Vista.

Re: Flight Simulator X not working
Hi,
Can't add much to this, other than I am running similar: Vista Ultimate 64
and FSX with SP1 with latest nVidia drivers and it runs fine with some good
frame rates. It does hog memory tho, so am running with 4Gig - but it did
run ok under 2gig.
I remember my FSX doing the cycling of black/vid/black -- I got around that
by ALt-Tabing out of FSX (fullwindow mode), then Alt-Tabbing back into again
and it cleared up for that session.
Other than that...sorry, can't help further.

Re: Flight Simulator X not working
Thanks for youor reply Paul - seem to have sorted it by installing some
multiple monitor patch from MS, which would at least let me play the
game. Strange though, as other games were working fine in Vista with 2
monitors (although didn't actually USE both monitors now I think about
it). Still getting BSODs and crashes from having 4GB installed though.
Currently having a "support chat" with MS in an attempt to deal with
this issue.
Interestingly, FSX crashed out last night whilst playing, no BSOD,
anything, just straight reboot (although there might have been a very
brief BSOD I didn't quite catch).
Paul, when you installed your Vista, did you install it with 2GB and
then add the 2nd 2GB afterwards or did it install fine first time round
with the full 4GB installed? That seems to be the only other way of
doing things from scouring round the internet, so may well give it a go.
Rather reluctant to reinstall Vista, but I guess that's the price
youpay for being a high end, early uptake user!
Thanks Paul

Re: Flight Simulator X not working
i'm running FSX on my laptop with vista 64 and 'only' 1gb of ram. little
slow starting but no problems after that so maybe its a driver conflict
or update needed

Re: Flight Simulator X not working
I had 2GB when I first installed, then added another 2GB last week. To be
honest, I've had very little trouble with Vista right from the start. I must
be a lucky one. I did install onto a freshly formatted HD though, and made
sure I had all the latest drivers and patches on another HD before I
finished on XP, therefore was not reliant on a BB connection.
I'm using the beta Nvidia driver 163.11, and have had no problems at all
with it.
I've got two monitors as well and have run FSX on either one, or both,
depending on my mood/where I'm flying to etc. It does slow things down a bit
when using both monitors, but not majorly.

Re: Flight Simulator X not working
Paul,
have you noticed much of a difference between 2 and 4gb? I know there is a
big one between 1 and 2 and of course bigger is better, but I was wondering
if you noticed a real difference or if it is diminishing returns.

Seem to finally have fixed things. Needed to install the multiple
monitor patch for Vista, lowered the memory FSB to 950, all after a
full reinstall. Now only get the out of memory errors, which I think
there are fixes for, but need to dig around for.
Sometimes hard to put just the right term into google to get what you
want, one word different and all of a sudden there are pages of
relevant results!
If anyone has a link to a fix for the out of memory errors, I would be
grateful if you could post it. Otherwise I'll adjust the pagefile
(think that was mentioned) and dig around some more. Makes me want to
pull my console out...
