RE: Windows Search fails to create catalog
I have the same problem.
Has anyone found a solution? May have to resort to Google's search.

Re: Windows Search fails to create catalog
Oh dear, a known bug in early builds of Vista, like yours, fixed for the
first time in 5744, I believe, and I know for sure it is fixed in the RTM
(which is what I am running and I had the same problem with the early
builds).

The only workaround I ever found was to "upgrade" Vista with the exact same
version (boot the Vista DVD, choose upgrade). THAT caused the index to
rebuild.

Er, the other choice is to buy Vista now if you have that option or wait
'til Jan 30th.

Re: Windows Search fails to create catalog

I have exactly the same problem. If I use the control panel to try to
access index settings, all the options are grayed out. If I use the
services console, "Windows Search" is not running. If I attempt to start
it, I get an error message saying it could not create a catalog.

THen a pop-up appears saying "Could not start the Windows Search . . ..
refer to "service-specific" error code - 2147218141"

I did find a very simple procedure for "Resetting the Index" at
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/85...h-service.html

I performed the procedure. There were no complications. All the
dialogs etc were reassuring. But the problem is still there.

I wonder if the problem is more the "catalog" rather then Windows
Search or the Index.
