Drive Image 2002 Work with Vista?
I have been using Drive Image 2002 to back-up and restore OS partitions for
my Windows XP systems for a few years now. I realize it isn't the "latest
and greatest" but it gets the job done.

I will be buying a Vista Basic Emachines system for my daughter tomorrow,
which comes with a single partition 120gb hard drive. I would ordinarily
use DI to leave a small-ish OS partition, and put the rest in a larger Data
partition. This makes overall back-up considerably easier.

Can I still use DriveImage 2002 (which handles NTFS drives without
difficulty so far) to manage a Vista system in this manner?

If not, are there any free (or inexpensive) tools that will allow me to do
this?

Thanks.

The NTFS file system in Vista is of a later variation than that of Windows
XP. Many people, including myself have found out, to our dismay, that the
problems created may not show up until days after using these older
utilities. I would not recommend that you use either Drive Image 2002 or
Partition Magic 8.01 or earlier. You need disk utilities that are designed
for the new iteration of NTFS that Vista incorporates.

Many thanks for this. And I realized after posting that I was actually
referring to Partition Magic for these tasks, rather than Drive Image 2002,
so I'm glad you understand what I was asking, rather than what I actually
said!

What disk utilities are available for this "new iteration of NTFS"? Does
Vista Basic itself come with any? Any free, or reasonably priced
third-party applications?

And am I correct in assuming that these more current tools would be
backwardly compatible, so I can also use them with my XP Home systems?

Thanks again for the reply and info.

Re: Drive Image 2002 Work with Vista?
Vista comes with a somewhat advanced disk manager that can do more than what
could be accomplished in Windows XP. It will do basis resizing.

I have been using Acronis Disk Management Suite (version 10.0 build 2160)
for about 4 months now. It is 100% compatible with Vista. I also like the
fact that I did not contribute to the Symantec money pit!

Re: Drive Image 2002 Work with Vista?
Thanks again, Richard. I did a little searching, and found the Vista disk
management you refer to. Hopefully it will be up to the job. The options
seemed to be 'greyed out' for some users from what I read, but with a little
luck I won't run into that. I'll look into Acronis as needed.

Agreed about the "Symantec money pit" - Drive Image and Partition Magic were
great products until Symantec swallowed them up.

Best,
