renaming a file

Hi, I have a problem. when I create a new folder and try to rename it (to
anything other then new folder) I get this following error: "the file or
folder does not exist".
does anyone know how to fix this?

HOW are you trying to rename the New Folder?

In Windows Explorer, when you right-click and choose Folder from the New
menu, it should add the New Folder to the list of folders. The name should
be highlighted. If you press Enter or click the mouse elsewhere or do
anything else to remove focus from that, the name New Folder will be
assigned. Before pressing Enter, though, you can simply type your preferred
new name. Once the name (either New Folder or your choice) has been
assigned, then you can Rename it in the usual way, by right-clicking on the
name or by pressing F2.

If that is not what you are asking, please post back and tell us, step by
step, what you are doing and what response you are getting.

Thank you for your fast reply. That is exactly what I do. create a new
folder, an while the name is highlighted I try to change it. As I press enter
the error appears and the folder remains "new folder". I also tried to rename
again after the folder appered on my desktop or in the mother folder. Also,
the same error accures when trying to create a new folder while browsing for
a folder to downlaod stuff from the internet for example. I also restarted
the computer hoping windows will fix itself but somthing wrose happend-
windows explorer stoped working at all. I restarted once more and the last
problem sorted out. Leaving the original problem, I can't rename folders.

Are you the Administrator, and logged in as such? Do you have permission to
rename files in that folder?

As a one-man, one-computer kind of guy, I've never had to worry much about
permissions and such - until Vista. Now, I've had to learn a little about
it, but I'm still no expert. I'll wait and watch with you for a real expert
to answer this question. I've not heard of this problem.

In the meantime, you might start Command Prompt as Administrator (Start |
All Programs | Accessories, then right-click on Command Prompt and click Run
as Administrator - but you probably knew all that). This opens an elevated
prompt and you may be able to use the old Ren command from here. And this
KB article might give you the clue you need, although it specifically
applies to earlier Windows versions:

Thanks for helping. I'm the only user on this computer and I don't know how
to log on as admin (the only option is to log on as user). I've tried running
cmd as admin and tried to follow advice given in other posts stating a
similier problem, but it doesn't work. How do I give myself permission?

I have the exact same problem with noone to answer also. No matter what you
try, as administrator or user, it will NOT allow you to rename a file or
folder. There are no parental permissions in place nor is there any other
software blocking. I know how to rename a file or folder, its simple and
should not take any other effort other than right clicking the file or folder
and renaming it and its done. Ive been doing it for years, but with Vista. to

hopefully a solution will come soon because it is hard to keep track when all
folders are named "new folder"

Hi, Yael - and Bob.

I've been holding off, hoping someone who really knows will jump in with the
real answer. In the meantime, I've seen other threads here with similar
problems - and few clear answers.

My latest theory is that you need to take ownership of the problem folder -
or its parent folder - or the whole volume where it resides. As I said, I
know very little about permissions, but I have solved a few problems in
Vista by doing this. I'm not sure of the correct procedure, but right-click
on the folder (or parent) name, click Properties, and then the Security tab.
I fumbled around here until my problem disappeared, but I can't tell you
exactly what I did or just how you should do it.

I REALLY should invest some time to learn more about Users, Ownership and
Permissions!

Perhaps this will help.

Step by step instruction on how to take ownership of a folder



Run CMD (as administrator) and type: takeown [path] /f <filename or folder>

OR

- Right-click the file/folder you want to own, click properties

- Click Security Tab

- Click Advanced

- Click the Owner Tab

- Click Edit

- Select the Administrators group from the list

- Click OK

- Click OK

- Click OK

You have now taken 'Ownership' of the file and you can close the property

Windows



Now again



1) Right-click on the file

2) Select Properties

3) Go to the Security tab again, click the Advanced button

4) Now Press Edit, then double-click 'Administrators' in the list and tick

the 'allow' box for 'Full control'



You have now taken 'Full control' of file
