Unassociating A File Type

A few minutes ago I was using Valve Hammer Editor and accidentally
associated a .vmf file with Notepad. The little notepad icon really
annoys me, and I've already used the Unassoc software by Ramesh and it's
done nothing. Is there any other way to unassociate the file so it opens
with 'unknown application'?

Re: Unassociating A File Type
Right-click the .vmf file and select "Open With" menu item. You would be
presented with more choices of applications and also a checkbox that asks
you whether you want your selection to be used for open files of .vmf type.
If you don't see your application in the list of applications, you can
browse through the Program Files folders and select the executable file of
your application.

Re: Unassociating A File Type

But my point is, I want it to open by default with 'unknown
application'.

Re: Unassociating A File Type
There is a utility mentioned at this site that claims to be able to do what
you want.
http://www.watchingthenet.com/associ...ows-vista.html

It is the Attachment unassoc_1_3.zip. Please check it carefully before
using.

Re: Unassociating A File Type
You can do the following:
1. Start the Run command (Win+R).

2. Type in the following text in the "Open" box:
assoc .vmf=

3. Click OK button.

The association with .vmf file extension will be removed.
