Hi, Gary.
In Vista's Control Panel | Folder Options | View, have you checked the box
that says, "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"? And unchecked "Hide
extensions for known file types"? You MAY also want to uncheck "Hide
protected operating system files (Recommended)", but you'll need permission
to do that.
This Folder Options screen is essentially unchanged from Windows XP (and
earlier).
