files open in wordpad and all gibberish

All my doc files are opening in wordpad and they are unreadable. I do have
microsoft office with word in the pc. When i right click on a doc file and
then click "open with" there is no "word "option. Available options are
wordpad,adobe and int.explorer. How do i force vista open all doc files in
word? thanks.

you don't have the "Choose Default Program" option listed?

If Microsoft Word does not appear in the Open With menu, click the Browse
button and navigate to the WinWord.exe file located in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Officexx. (xx wil be the version of office you have
installed)

Click WinWord.exe and select Open. This will add Word to the Open With menu.
Select it and make sure that the "Always use the selected program to open
this kind of file" option is selected and click OK.

Try repairing Word. This will fix the file association related problems as well.
