Hi, Stefan.
What kind of maps? The word is used in many ways, both in and out of
computing.
Do you mean road maps? Or web-site maps? Or are you talking about Windows
Explorer?
If the latter, then I share your frustrations. It's not hard to get the
View that I want, but it's frustrating to have to do it again and again
because Vista so frequently forgets what I so carefully arranged before.

In an Explorer window's Details view, it's easy enough to change a column's
width: just use your mouse in the Header Bar (column headers) and, when it
becomes a double-arrowed cross, either drag it to the width you want or
double-click to automatically set it to accommodate the widest item
currently visible in that column.
Or, even better, right-click anywhere in the Header Bar and choose from the
top two items: Size Column to Fit or Size All Columns to Fit.
But I don't know how to set this to apply DEPENDABLY to all folders or to
this folder forever. :^{
