Hi, Leslie.
If you right-click on the document file (in Windows Explorer, for example),
then click Restore Previous Versions (or Properties | Previous Versions),
you MIGHT be able to retrieve the original version. This needs to be done
soon, of course, before too many later versions are written over the
original.
I haven't had to do this, thank goodness, but I've heard that it often
works. Please report back with your experience, especially if it works!
