mail merge word unable to open

I am using xp home.
I have a data list of names addresses etc stored in Xl.
When I use word - or avery's own program I get as far as "open data file.
reqest entire spread sheet . On clicking OK the nest headline says "Word
can not open data"
Any one know where I go from here, or what has gone wrong with my data file?

Why are you posting in a Vista group if you're using XP?
Word requires Outlook for a mail merge.
We have no idea what you're using from the meager details in your post.
