I have spent many, many hours trying to resolve this problem...
I have a new laptop running Vista Ultimate x64. I have an external drive
connected to a desktop that holds all my media files (music, photos, etc.).
I have my old laptop which runs XP Pro with a mapped network drive to this
share with offline files enabled. It works great!
I went into the control panel on my new laptop and enabled Offile Files. A
reboot was required. After rebooting I noticed that offline folders was not
an option still. I went back to the control panel and opened the offline
files setting. The panel told me that offline files is enabled but not yet
active. I should reboot this computer for offline files to be active. I have
since rebooted many, many times. They have never become active.
I thought I might try started the service myself in the services panel. I
selected the offline files service and hit start. It tells me "The system
cannot find the path specified."
Now I've been poking around in the registry. I haven't changed anything, but
I haven't seen any paths related to the CSC service that look incorrect. I'm
not sure if all the necessary information is correct or not....
I've spent literally hours on the phone with HP support with no success.
Because I download and rip music regularly this configuration makes the most
sense for me. This way, regardless of where I add media, the other computers
get a copy of the media. Also, if a drive goes bad on any of these machines
I don't lose my media. I have other copies.
