Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
I upgraded my Vista Home Basic to Vista Home Premium. Now I have duplicate
user accounts/profiles showing up on my login screen. As far as I can tell,
there is only one true account, but two identical icons appear. If I add a
new user account, same thing: two icons appear for the new account. How do I
delete the duplicates?

RE: Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
Has anyone helped you with this Jeff? I am having a problem simular to
yours. I have the ulitmate version, upgrading from xp home editon. I wonder
if I could just re-download Vista and just forget about the other programs
and files I had on the home edition? I am regretting buying this every day.
It's been 3 days now of me messing with this and I have our home business to
take care of that I need to get on here.
Let me know if you figure anything out.
Thanks, Helen

Re: Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
If you look in "computer" (Old windows explorer etc.) Do you see a folder
called windows.old on the C: drive?
This may be causing your problem.
I have had to do this on a couple of PCs and it has worked each time.

Click on your start button (the windows orb)
Then type "cleanup" one word without the quotes. In the start search box
Press enter
Select the drive you want to clean up
Choose your C: drive because that is the one you want to clean of the extra
windows.old folder. Click ok. This is safe
Give your computer a minute to analyze itself.
Scroll down the list of files to delete and if you do have the "windows.old"
file/folder listed there put a check in the box beside it.
Then click on OK
Reboot and you should be ok

Re: Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
Anthony's solution is intended if you are upgrading from xp to vista. I am
upgrading from vista basic to vista home premium and have found the problem
with duplicate user accounts. Any advice gladly accepted!

I've also had that problem, upgrading from Basic to Ultimate. Each
icon on the login page shows up twice. If I set the policy to not show
users in gpedit.msc, it shows two "other user" icons. There's some
config file or registry setting that's getting doubled.

Re: Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
I am having this same issue, Duplicate icons for each user showing on the
login screen. They are clearly the same user, both showing logged etc. This
problem started after upgrading from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate. The
version of Ultimate used was the full version not the Upgrade although the
upgrade option was selected.

Any information on this would be appreciated.

Re: Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
I have reported to Microsoft. They have no idea what the problem is and are
unable to re-create it. My Fujitsu A3110 pc has a fingerprint reader
authentication with recocgnition software from Omnipass - & I think this may
have something to do with the problem. When I reloaded Windows without the
additional PC software everything was ok. When I then loaded the pC software
drivers, problem came back & I suspect iit may have something to do with the
fingerprint software. Does your pc use fingerprint recognition?

Yes, It is a new Lenovo 3000 N100 with a fingerprint reader and the OmniPass
software installed.

Re: Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
I've got exactly the same set of symptoms, same fingerprint reader, etc... My
suspicion echos what I've read here and the Omnipass software is at fault. If
anyone resolves this issue, please share. As a side note, it doesn't seem to
cause an problems, just annoying. In addition, I've noticed that ALL user
accounts are duplicated on the login screen; I created a new admin account
and it, too, was duplicated so I now have four (4) icons but only two (2)
accounts.

Re: Duplicate user accounts after Vista upgrade
I was able to resolve the problem with the following steps:
Deleting the fingerprint reader from the device manager, choosing to remove
drivers as well.
Uninstalling the OminPass software and deleting the directory it was
installed in under Program Files.
Rebooting.
Re-installing the fingerprint reader hardware and driver.
Re-Installing the OmniPass hardware.

Hope this helps.
