How to add item in SendTo menu

This must be a simple question:
In XP, you can open SendTo folder and add a shortcut. In Vista, I tried to
open C:\Users\MyProfile\SendTo folder. But the folder appears as a shortcut
and hidden. I got an "Access is denied" message. I changed the permission and
change the ownership. Still can open it.

You shouldn't have done that. The location is
C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Wind ows\SendTo

The folder you are looking at that appears to be a shortcut is called a Junction or Symbolic Link. These folders are used for backward compatibility, ma9nly for installation programs that are looking for an old system folder location. They appear where a folder, that was part of a previous version of Windows has been changed in Vista.

You need to use a command prompt to locate the new folder that the Junction points to.

Go to Start/Run and type cmd and press OK.

The command window should open at the C:\Users\<username> folder.

Type dir /ah and press the ENTER key.

The result will be a list of folders on the C: drive.

You will see some folders that have a <JUNCTION> as part of the location. These are all of the junction shortcuts. They will have the following syntax.

<date> <time> <JUNCTION> SendTo [C:\Users\<username>AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windo ws\SendTo]

This shows the old name of the folder (SendTo) with the path new location in brackets.

It would be a good idea to print this list for future reference.

Adding to Alice and Ronnie:

To quickly access the SendTo folder, type one of these commands in Start,
Search (or in the Start,Run dialog)

shell:sendto

-or-

%appdata%\microsoft\windows\sendto
