Problem with updates or lack of them
Since march I have not been able to recieve updates for windows, I check and
always get an error code, Programs are now beginnning to shut down or not
work at all, and when I go to the microsoft website to download the updates,
I cannot as it will lead me through the process then a page will flash up
explaining internet explorer cannot connect to this site, then the next page
from microsoft will be a thankyou for downloading even though nothing has
been downloaded. Where can I locate the validation code required to go
through the alternate method

[Crossposted to Windows Update newsgroup]

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1)
and IE version, Tracey.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What anti-
spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

> ...[i] always get an error code

And that error is...?

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/
or anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea
Timer, AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA)
before attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-
party firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

Re: Problem with updates or lack of them
Hi, the windows is vista premium, the error code that comes up with windows
update check is 80244019, I can download anything from another program it
seems as long as it does not relate in any way to windows, I was given a set
of instructions to follow through with, and this included stopping the
Cryptographic that is found within services, and this cryptographic did not
want to stop, but even after going through all those procedures recommended i
still have got nowhere. The anti virus other than windows defender is
nortons.

Re: Problem with updates or lack of them
If you're running a Norton suite (e.g., Norton Internet Security or Norton
360):

1. Make sure that the Windows Firewall is disabled (in favor of the Norton
Firewall).

2. Alternately, see if (a) disabling the Norton Firewall and then (b)
enabling the Windows Firewall corrects the problem.

More, courtesy of an earlier post by MVP TaurArian:

You cannot download updates when you access the Windows Update Web site
from...computer that is behind a firewall or a proxy server
(Ignore the reference to WinXP; error 0x80244019 is cited here)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896226

You experience problems when you access the Windows Update Version 5 or
Version 6 Website through a server that is running ISA Server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885819

Troubleshooting Windows Update v.5 Authentication Issue
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb457028.aspx
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. In the
upper right on the page, you will see the following: [Error number:
0x80244021]. In
addition, the null log on may produce a message with error code 0x80244018
or 0x80244019
