plug and play?

can someone please help ?,i've built a computer out of bits and pieces"pent 4
,2.8ghz 768ram 250 h/drive,dvdplayer,dvd/rw,xp pro 3. all is working fine
untill i plug anything into usb.it will not recongniseit. i have tried 4
different printers ,only 1 will work by lpt1. but i want to install smaller 1
via usb. ANY IDEAS ? I've tried everything i can think of!
