Automatic updates fail
Hello world,

Can you help please.

I had to do a repair reinstall of Windows XP SP2 on a couple of PCs and
afterwards the automatic updates stop working.

I've read and tried the KB fix, but it's made no difference.

Basically the system identifies a number of fixes to apply (approx 80) but
can not apply them. I've tried Windows update and get the same issue,
downloads ok but fails to install.

However, if I download them manually and apply them manually, they work
fine. The automatic function will stop trying to download and apply them
too.

I would just download and apply the lot but it fails on any new ones too, so
a fix is better.

Any ideas, thanks,

Jerry.

RE: Automatic updates fail
If its a Windows XP x64 SP2, you should be aware that it belongs to Windows
2003 family and it requires an interactive desktop to install.

RE: Automatic updates fail
Jerry,
I had the same problem, and it seems to be the general with everyone else
who write in. I had 81 of them after fixing mine. I finally after
troubleshooting and doing everything but standing on my head and wasting
several days of nothing. I finally wrote down the kb_____ numbers and went
to the catalog update and manually putting them in. better than losing your
machine to bad virus's.

RE: Automatic updates fail
After many tries dowloading from catalog without any success, i moved from
"Windows Update" to "Microsoft Update". And since then, i am able to do all
the updates. I supposed this is the way Bill and friends want us to go to !!!

Warning "Windows Update" and "Microsoft Update" are not the same. The first
one ables you to update Windows only. The second one able you to update all
your Microsoft products.

What i dont understand is that the only software that i have from Microsoft
is Windows !!! Why do i need "Microsoft Update"??? Still a mysterie but now
it is working.
