windows internet explorer 8 installation

i am operating with windows vista home premium and have tried to download ie8
but keep being told this is not supported by my operating system - the
version i tried to download is x86-enu.exe. why will this not work as i have
tried to download updates etc but windows says all updates installed & no
others available.
