IE 8 high cpu usage
I have noticed lately that IE8 is running with high CPU usage all the time.
Not just when loading a page. It is running 50 - 100% cpu. This is not
just on one machine. But have noticed it on several. All machines are
running XP SP2 or 3.

It is so bad I have switched to FireFox, however I would rather use IE 8 but
not at this cost.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: IE 8 high cpu usage
Hi Dave,

Dual core or single core processor? Are any 'movies' playing in other
windows/applications (Media Center). There is a beta version of Adobe Flash
in the pipeline coming. Do you tend to keep a lot of tabs opened at once?

To test, start all your IE windows in no-Addons mode where Flash and other
ActiveX and Third-party toolbars and BHO's are disabled.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (no-Addons)

I have a lot of FX extensions installed. FX takes 30 seconds or so to load
each time. IE8 with third-party browser extensions disabled, a local
homepage (Flash and other Active X are enabled) loads in an instant. Vista
x86 SP2 4Gb Ram.

To speed up IE8 disable third-party browser extensions. Tools>Internet
Options - Advanced tab, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
Restart all open IE windows.

The throttling CPU is caused by heavy disk usage from running low integrity
processes like (maybe) some of your IE Addons and ActiveX. You really don't
need any Addons with IE8. Popup blocker, autocomplete, phishing filter, ad
blocker and search are all built-in.

Regards.

Re: IE 8 high cpu usage
From your headers: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180

Why isn't the WinXP SP3 computer fully patched at Windows Update?

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode?

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorerís (No Add-ons) Mode [Applies to IE7 &
IE8 in all OSS]
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

4. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Re: IE 8 high cpu usage
Hi Dave,

Maybe you had an old version of one of your IEAddons and it slipped in an
silent automatic update WHILE you weren't using IE.

Some IE Addons check (call home) while you are surfing with IE. IE itself
may prevent the connection for the update check and so you see the throttled
memory usage as the addon opens more and more connections.

Start>Run>msconfig - Startup tab,

You will see a number of applications that launch update services at windows
startup... Google Toolbar, Quicktime, Adobe Updater..

I disable these autoupdate items from my windows startup list on my XP and
Vista machines. Most new/compatible IE Addons/Plugins have application
settings to turn automatic updates on/off.

Regards.
