If you had a wide screen monitor, the Favorites Pane would easily fit on the
screen and not take any space that is used for anything important. And, the
star turns the pane on and off, so you can leave the pane closed all of the
time if you desire to do that -- which is what I do.
Why would you want to remove the star, that's how you close the offending
favorites pane. You formerly had a Favorites Button that took more space
than the star.
