Reoccurring issues with I E, have read and tried the other suggest

Hi, I have a Dell Studio, running Vista SP2, has current Macfee suite,
Windows defender and Firewall. Origanlly came with I E 7 work perfectly,
installed I E 8 through windows update. Originally worked good, had some
incompatabilty issues on some pages but were always corrected pushing
compatibility button. As time has progressed, I have started getting the
error windows, mostly stating that I E has stopped working and needs to
close. Recently, I cannot access web pages I have been to many times in the
past. Sometimes hitting the compatability button corrects this, other times
the page goes blank with a message saying the page was unable to be
connected. I have read through this forum and a couple of others, and have
tried running IE without add ons, reset the advanced settings but nothing
helps. I have not added any new programs or add ons, if I use Google Chrome
to access web, all pages load quickly and without any error messages. I
would like to keep Internet Explorer, but will not tolerate this continued
performance. I tried to go back to IE 7, but cannot find how to remove IE 8.
