IE8 brings sidebar problems

My wife allowed an auto update to install IE8. Immediately the sidebar clock
stopped and other gadgets looked different. Unfortunately a restore to an
earlier setting could not be completed (another problem to solve?) What can
she do to correct the problem? Why does Microsoft bring such approbrium upon
itself by distributing compter-wrecking software updates?

Change the DPI setting back to it's default setting of 96, or, remove the
offending sidebar clock.
