Read Mail button in IE8 does not launch Outlook e-mail or anything

I upgraded from IE7 to IE8 and am running XP. The Read Mail button in tool
bar does not work or launch Outlook which is my default e-mail program.
Works fine in IE7 and when I uninstall IE8 and go back to IE7 it works again.
I have Outlook as a shortcut on desktop and it works and can open e-mail
but not launch from IE browser.
Any ideas how to fix?
