internet explorer 8 flashes and disappears at startup

The problem is exactly as described in the title. There seem to be
suggestions for IE7 but not 8.

It is running on XP Home BTW

1. Start Internet Explorer without add-ons from:
Right-click the IE icon on the desktop. Choose Start without add-ons.
or
Programs> Accessories> System tools> Internet Explorer (no add-ons)
If the problem goes away, you have an incompatible browser add-on installed.

When you start Internet Explorer 8, it opens and then closes immediately:
