IE8 Navigation Failure

Hi,

Just got a refurbished Dell Laptop (running XP Home), from a friend. All
seems operating ok, but unable to get websites. The only web address
working is yahoo search and did manage to get windows updates to download
and
install. That means my Internet connection is working. When www.msn.com is
entered or any other website address, a "Navigation Failure" message occurs,
this happens on all websites. Then a webpage comes up that says "Navigation
to the Webpage Canceled".

Does anyone know what is causing this and can it be fixed? If so, how?

Other info: The laptop is setup for wireless, and I am using a router. But
as mentioned above, I do get yahoo search and was able to download and
install Windows updates.

Whenever you receive a used computer - unless it comes directly from the
manufacturer - the first thing you do is to erase the hard disk and
reinstall all the software. That's the only way you know that the
computer is not affected my misconfiguration errors (and malware.)
