Which version of Windows? (Including SP level- SP1,SP2,etc.)
Which version of Internet Explorer?
What third-party security suite/antivirus program is installed and running?
Is that program downloading updates automatically?
It's normal for IE8 to have additional processes running.
The additional IE processes are created to make Automatic Crash Recovery
possible.

But, these processes should close shortly after the IE window or tab is
closed. It's possible that a browser add-on is causing the crashes and
keeping those processes open.
First...
Start Internet Explorer without add-ons from:
Right-click the IE icon on the desktop. Choose Start without add-ons.
or
Programs> Accessories> System tools> Internet Explorer (no add-ons)
If the problem goes away, you have an incompatible browser add-on installed.
