IE8 - Printing Large Files & Accelerator Button Issues
Having issues printing large files in IE8, samples I've been using are above
12 MB and above 1000 pages. NOTE: This problem did not exist in IE6, I've
not tested on IE7.

After opening the file, does not matter if it is HTML, if I try to print the
file (File -> Print - click Print) but then IE just sits there for several
minutes before the print job actually starts. In the IE8 status bar, the
printer icon appears, but it takes an unusually long time for the print job
to start.

Regarding the accelerator button, and again with these large files, if I
highlight a section of text to print (30 or 40 lines) the browser has
difficulties scrolling the page and overall slows to a crawl. To help
address this issue, which I believe should not be necessary, I used the
following registry entry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\Services]
"SelectionActivityButtonDisable"=dword:0000000 1

Continuing with the selection of text, if I try to print just the selection
(File -> Print -> choose "Selecton" radio option -> Print) the browser
continues to take several minutes to print just the highlighted text.

To reproduce this issue, open any file of substantial size (I even tried
renaming a 12MB .dll file to .htm) and try printing it or selecting text. I
have tried this in the IE8 (No Add-ons) mode and these two issues still
exist. I have also been able to reproduce this issue on three different
systems, all running Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) with the latest patches.
Hardware on these systems is 4GB RAM, Core2 Duo @ 3GHz.

If there are any ideas or if anyone can confirm this issue exists on other
systems would be of great help in reporting this to MS.

Re: IE8 - Printing Large Files & Accelerator Button Issues
Are you dealing with an HP printer? Is the printer on a network>

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE in No Add-ons mode:

=> Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without
Add-ons; or

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. Does the behavior persist if you boot into Safe Mode with Networking?
[Careful! Only remain in Safe Mode just long enough to test!]

4a. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

4b. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

5. Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you
have an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

Re: IE8 - Printing Large Files & Accelerator Button Issues
Internet Explorer doesn't do printing...it's a browser. It hands off
print jobs to your printer driver.

Re: IE8 - Printing Large Files & Accelerator Button Issues
HI Ryon,

A 12mb html file? I would consider publishing it as a pdf or xps download
instead.

That aside, I can only guess that your slow printing (regardless that it is
1000 pages long) is caused by the use of absolutely positioned elements
within your markup. You can test this by choosing the View>Styles>No Style
menu from IE and then retesting your print rendering speed.

Please consider a different publishing format and save some valuable
resources and time.

Regards.
