Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to
this newsgroup.

Which means your WinXP computer's not been fully-patched for at least 6
months.
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE7? How about when you installed
KB972260 and the earlier IE7 updates that failed to install?
Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I have the same issue XP Pro SP3 Vipre antivirus off and Comodo firewall
off. Has happened only with KB972260

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB972260).
LOOK!! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer IE queue"
(which is 47830).
For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx
