IE8 refuses to open a web page

IE8 refuses to open a web page
"Internet Explorer cannot display the web page". The diagnostics does not
find any problem with the connection. Ipconfig shows all is well. I can ping
individual websites, the loopback address, the router. I have reset IE
settings on the advanced tab of Internet Options. All firewalls are off.
Even tried a Winsock fix. Firefox works fine.

Help!

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Did you encounter this behavior before you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
