IE8 search toolbar error

I recently reinstalled IE8 onto my computer. Now the search box at
the top right of the window (which lets you pick the search provider)
is not working. No matter what I type in to search I end up getting
results as though I typed "%s" into the text box.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

Use the Manage Search Providers tool to see how your default
Search is set up. FWIW my guess would be that you have
Search suggestions enabled and it's not working. So, if you see that
Enabled on the one you have set to default try unchecking it and see
how your symptom changes.
