This has nothing to do with Internet Explorer.
1. Before doing anything else, write down the .NET Framework versions which are already installed:

2. Now see Resolution Method 2 in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 (ignore the title). After running the appropriate/needed tool, (re)install all .NET Framework versions manually using the download links on the page.

I am using Windows Professional XPSP3. I have turned Automatic Update on. Have had no trouble downloading and updating XP with this method until I attempted to update KB951847, which always fails: during updatin I get the following error:
"Initializing installation... done!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 (update 1 of 1)... "
Half way through the update it fails. If I try and shut the computer and allow updates to be installed at shutdown, the update either fails or the computer seems to be in an endless loop. Any help greatly appreciated. Also posted to "xp help and support group." Thanks.
