Many thanks for your suggestions! The second way works for me, even
after the second system reboot and without any (visible) side effects!!! :-)

Instructions for region "Deutsch":
Start->Einstellungen->Systemsteuerung->Verwaltung->Dienste->Designs:
Aktion: Beenden
Starttyp: Manuell

Btw my graphic card is nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X.

I 'lost' my IE8 tool bars (e.g., black on black) after installing an HP F4400
printer. After numerous, unsuccessful attempts (including deleting Toolbar
in registry), the Changing Background Themes/Colors approached seemed to
work; HOWEVER, I have not rebooted to see if 'stays.'
