IE8 & XP Home: I've had IE8 (not beta) running a while and after a normal
session (must have typed a bad key combination), my Favorites list is not
visible. Clicking on the favorites toolbar item brings up a box that shows an
Add to Favorites button and my browsing history. How do I undo my damage (and
prevent it in the future)?

Re: no favorites
Hi,
Are there, just under the Add to Favorites button, three tabs- Favorites,
Feeds and History?

Unfortunately that Star icon is used to represent the Favorites Center
no matter what mode it is left in. You left yours in its History mode.

Press Ctrl-i instead of clicking on the button. Then the Favorites Center
will always open in its Favorites mode. BTW notice the button's tooltip
that continually reminds us that we can also use its Alt-c shortcut?
IMO that is misleading. In fact, Alt-c is *not* the equivalent of clicking on
the Favorites Center button, e.g. to open it in its current mode.
Alt-c in fact, would also do what you want, being simply an alternative
to the better known Ctrl-i
