IE8 conditional style bug ?
It appears that the new IE8 (when in IE8 standards mode) will not work
correctly when you have both inline and linked style sheets...if you're in
quirks or ie7 mode its fine, but the moment you switch to IE8 standards mode
(for both broser and docMode) your linked styles are gone!

<!--[if gte IE 8]> <!-- Not recognized unless in quirks/ie7 mode -->
<link href="css/ie8.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" title="ie8">
<![endif]-->

test example --- http://mtroadwines.com/ie8test.htm

Any confirmation or info would be a big help!

Re: IE8 conditional style bug ?
Hi,

Yes, known... the IE version is used to resolve the conditional comment, so
regardless of your doctype declaration the IE version will always be 8, the
browser mode does not change the browser version vector. You will need to
use another testing platform like IETester from debugbar.com to compare the
rendering of your pages in different IE versions if you are using
conditional comments. IETester includes the debugbar which will show you
which stylesheets have been loaded, confirming that the correct IE version
is chosen when parsing the conditional comments.

Regards.

Re: IE8 conditional style bug ?
Hi Rob,

Thank you for your reply but I think my question confused you. My point is,
that i want to be able to load an IE8 specific style sheet if in "standards
mode"- IE8 won't correctly load it, or use it.. thats the problem.
I'm not talking about testing here, I'm talking about using different style
sheets on my site. IE8 should allow you to use an ie8 standards specific
style sheet based on a conditional.

Hope that makes more sense?

Re: IE8 conditional style bug ?
Hi,

Whats your OS version and Service Pack level?

Your test page displays as expected on my Vista SP1.

Press F12 to display the developer tool and then select the CSS tab. There
is a list there of loaded resources. As I change the Browser Mode (on the
Developer Tool menu) I see the list of loaded resources change as per the
conditional comments.

Are you using XP?

There is a known issue with VML and MSO conditional comments on XP systems.

Regards.

RE: IE8 conditional style bug ? - SOLUTION!
Hi All,

Thank you for your help. I've discovered the solution, apparently the
problem was having each style sheet use its own title attribute. Once I took
the title off all but the main style sheet, no prob.

This is a weird issue unique to IE8 - and although I've been told its
supposed to work that way, something to do with "Stylesheet Preference" - it
only serves to create problems since the solution requires you remove the
title which could be helpful when scripting, etc - when you need to call the
style sheet.

In any case, not sure if this is a bug, or its supposed to be that way, but
I hope Microsoft investigates further.

Thanks
