Uninstall the beta (to revert to whatever was your prior version of
Internet Explorer) and install the *released* version of IE8.

Are you using any ad-block add-ons or software? Are you using a hosts
file to block hosts?
What security products (anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall, etc.) did
you install that interrogate and possibly alter your web traffic?
Same trouble if you reboot into Windows' Safe Mode (with networking) and
then connect to those problematic sites? Got an example of what is a
problematic web site? And at that site, what content is it that shows
as an "X" placeholder?
