Problem opening pdf files in IE8

If I try to open a pdf file in IE8 I get this:
"Cannot use Adobe Reader to view pdf in your web browser. Reader will now
exit. Please exit your browser and try again"

I notice that the Adobe add-in is version 8.0.0.456 while Acrobat reader is
8.1.4
Am I getting this message because they are not the same versions, and if so,
how do I update the IE add-in?

Neither one is the latest version, and this may have contributed to your
problem. You should first update Adober Reader to the current version of
V9.
