IE 8 "This website requires you to log in" error

Everytime I try to download anything on this computer, I get the error "This
website requires you to log in" even though most of the sites I access don't
have that facility.

Tried RIES without success.

I use XP Pro sp3 inc all updates + IE 8

Can anyone suggest a remedy?

Try running IE with no add ons [start --> all programs --> accessories
--> system tools --> IE (no add ons)] and see if you still get the error.
